Performance of an ATM LAN switch with back-pressure function

چکیده
Traffic control schemes for ATM networks can be classified into two categories: reactive congestion control and preventive congestion control. Reactive congestion controlcan be effective in ATM local area networks as well as preventive congestion control. A possible scheme to realize efficient reactive congestion control is a switch architecture, which possesses buffers on both sides of input and output ports with a back-pressure function. Especially, when this switch is applied to ATM LANs for data transfer services, its performance should be evaluated by taking into account the bursty traffic, which is a main purpose of the current paper. In this paper, we show the maximum throughput, the packet delay distribution, and the approximate packet loss probability of such an ATM switch with back-pressure function under bursty traffic through an analytic method. In addition to a balanced traffic condition, unbalanced traffic and a mixture of bursty and stream traffic are also considered. Through numerical examples, we show the effects of the average packet length and the output buffer size on the perfomance of the switch quantitively.

An ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is a promising technology for realizing B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) that can transfer many types of multimedia information. In ATM-based networks, all information is transferred by dividing into fixed-size packets (called as cells). The ATM network is a connection-oriented network by virtue of a notion of virtual circuits called VPs...

The segmentation process requi to carry TCP trafc over ATM networks can have an important e ect on the network performances. The e ciency of the TCP protocol over ATM networks is compared with the unfragmented TCP tra c, the comparison being based on the aggregate network throughput and on the throughput provided to single connections. Only a single switch with one-way tra c is considered; conn...

This paper describes a GSPN model of an ATM LAN exploiting the EFCI ABR service category, and illustrates some numerical results. The GSPN model is constructed adopting a recently proposed approach for the use of GSPNs in the development of performance models of ATM network components. The numerical results quantify the dependence of the performance of the ATM LAN on several system parameters, ...

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology performance is evaluated for Class C (variable bit rate, asynchronous) data transfer, as would be typically found when migrating legacy applications to an ATM environment. Of particular interest are the end-to-end latencies obtainable using ATM networks to transfer time critical data. Latencies obtained using Classical IP over ATM and raw ATM using th...
متن کاملAtm Network’s Delay Parameter Measurement Using Simulation Method
Network performance in B-ISDN networks depends primarily on the three lower layers of the B-ISDN protocol : the physical layer, the ATM layer and the AAL layer [1,p267]. Network performance parameters for the ATM layer is the most important. And it includes six QoS parameters which used to measure the performance of the network for a given connection such as: cell loss ratio (CLR), maximum cell...
